Whoopi Goldberg: Mel Gibson’s not a racist

In an interview with The Metro Whoopi Goldberg revealed that she doesn’t believe that Mel Gibson is a racist but rather that he’s a bonehead. She also clearly states that she wasn’t sticking up for the struggling actor but rather it was a slow news day and particular bloggers interpreted them how they wanted.

On why she stuck for Mel Gibson….

I didn’t actually. All I said was that in my opinion Mel Gibson isn’t a racist. That isn’t sticking up for someone. I know him, I’ve spent time with him, my family have spent time with him – I’d have noticed if he was racist. I didn’t stick up for him but I said I’ve met real racists and he isn’t one of them. He’s a bonehead.

On bloggers and getting criticised…

Sure, from bloggers who don’t have anything else to do but reinterpret what they think they heard and comment on a clip from YouTube rather than listen to what I said in its entirety.

Goldberg is in London for the next three weeks to fill in for the previous Mother Superior (Sheila Hancock). When asked if it made her feel older from playing Deloris Van Cartier:

No matter what I do, I’m getting older. I feel it in my knees. It’s reminded me there’s not much of an adult in me, what little there is I’m putting into Mother Superior.
