What’s On – January 2020

Get rid of the New Year Blues with the hottest gigs and events around the country…

10th Jan: Omar (Fairfield Halls, Croydon)

British soul legend Omar brings his live show to the newly-reopened Fairfield Halls in Croydon this January. Performing songs from his latest album ‘The Man’, plus hits including ‘There’s Nothing Like This’, ‘Say Nothin’’ and ‘Golden Brown’, don’t miss the chance to see London’s finest Neo-Soul in his element. bit.ly/2rxwwRY

From 12th Jan: Cirque du Soleil: LUZIA (Royal Albert Hall, London)

Ladies and gentlemen, boys, girls, and everyone in-between, roll up – it’s time for the annual arrival of the greatest show on earth! Cirque du Soleil begins its residency in the Royal Albert Hall for another series of impressive performances that leave the audience in awe. Written and directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, in association with Brigitte Poupart, LUZIA takes you to an imaginary Mexico, like in a waking dream, where light (“luz” in Spanish) quenches the spirit and rain (“lluvia”) soothes the soul. With this as its setting, the wonderful circus performers and artists put on a true spectacle that dazzles all who have the chance to see it! cirk.me/2P7Z4dS

19th Jan: Anti Diet Riot Fest (Colours, Hoxton)

It’s hardly an exaggeration to say that every January, we are bombarded with ads, editorials and seemingly innocuous small talk that reinforces the need to diet to start the year off right. And while there’s no harm in wanting to make some healthier life choices, it doesn’t mean that we have to punish ourselves to achieve some mysterious ideal – and now, there’s a whole event to counteract this whole ideology. Founded by Londoner Becky Young, the Anti Diet Riot Club is a collective that shuns diet culture – and what better time than January to throw their first festival. Featuring the likes of award-winning blogger Stephanie Yeboah and eating counsellor Devinia Noel, as well as yoga and creative writing workshops, this will provide a positive, safe space for all who are exhausted of hating on their bodies. bit.ly/2E4daGK

22nd, 23rd & 24th Jan: Keb’ Mo’ (London, Glasgow, Dumfries)

Legendary bluesman and four-time Grammy Award-winner Keb’ Mo’ has announced selected UK shows for January 2020 – this run of dates will also see Keb’, an acknowledged modern master of American roots music, heading into mainland Europe and then across to India. Ahead of this tour, Keb’ closed out 2019 with the release of his first Christmas album, Moonlight, Mistletoe & Youents24.com/uk/tour-dates/keb-mo

From 28th Jan: The Invitation (Bethnal Green, London)

If you’re looking for a dining experience with a real touch of the unknown, the new immersive theatrical show from Secret Theatre Project should be right up your alley. Fresh from a sell-out run in Hong Kong, The Invitation transports its guests to a Masquerade Party with a dark secret in a five-star hotel, where once donning their disguises, participants become a part of a devilish narrative of action, murder and intrigue. Dinner and a show – what more can one want? bit.ly/36oHCr0

From 29th Jan: Ashanti with Ginuwine and Mario (National Tour)

Queen of Noughties R&B Ashanti has never really left our hearts, but now she’s back in full force with a UK tour! With an arsenal of brilliant tracks such as ‘Rock Wit U’, ‘Only U’ and tough breakup anthem ‘Foolish’, the multi-platinum selling singer-songwriter could do a tour all on her own – but to our delight, she’s bringing along fellow caramel-voiced crooners Ginuwine and Mario to some of the dates. We wouldn’t be surprised if, by the time you’re reading, all the tickets are sold out – but in the chance they’re not, we’d advise you to run, not walk, and grab the chance to see what’ll surely be a great show.
