New Movie Alert: Sprinter

Though many of us know them best for being the successful Black actor couple we all wish we knew, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith are also skilled presenters and producers – from Jada’s now-viral sensation, Red Table Talk, to Will’s new venture on Facebook Watch, Will Smith’s Bucket List.

If that weren’t impressive enough, there’s still plenty to come from the Smiths this year, as the new movie release from their production company is set to hit UK cinemas in May. Titled Sprinter, the film highlights an authentic Caribbean experience that is rarely shown on screens, with a display of spirituality and sacrifice through a hopeful athlete’s journey to becoming a sprinting sensation.

Filmed in Jamaica, Sprinter follows the story of 17-year-old Akeem Sharp (played by Dale Elliot), an ambitious runner who hopes to rise through the ranks of athletics. With his once-in-a-generation speed, Akeem (nicknamed ‘Rasta Rocket’) is set to become Jamaica’s next big track-and-field sensation. His goal is to qualify for the national youth team then compete at the World Youth Championships held in Philadelphia.

However life at home isn’t as smooth sailing; with a volatile father and an unruly brother, the running track becomes Akeem’s only escape. Akeem’s other motivation to become successful is his mother, as competing consistently promises to take him to the US where she has been living as an illegal immigrant for over a decade to support the family. Despite this, temptations and distractions arise and threaten his career as an athlete.

Written and Directed by Storm Saulter (Better Mus Come), the film has an all-star cast including newcomer Dale Elliot, Kadeem Wilson (Ghett’ A Life), Dennis Titus (The Mighty Quinn), Shantol Jackson (Yardie), Bryshere Y, Gray (Empire, The New Edition Story), Lorraine Toussaint (Selma, Orange Is The New Black), and David Alan Grier (The Cool Kids, The Carmichael Show, In Living Colour). The film has already won three awards at the American Black Film Festival including Audience Award, Best Feature, and Best Director – so it’s well worth taking a look once it arrives here this summer.
