So Mahershala Ali has had a pretty phenomenal year thus far: an Oscar, a SAG award, becoming a father for the first time, becoming the internet’s main crush… the list goes on.
And it seems as if 2017’s successes haven’t quite ended here, as it has now looks as if he’s signed up for the third season of HBO critical darling True Detective, taking over from Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams.
The Moonlight star took to Instagram on Thursday (27th July) with a promotional image from the show, captioned simply with ‘Season 3 @hbo’.

Despite the fact that the programme, which received rave reviews for its debut starring Matthew McConnaughey and Woody Harrelson, has not been officially renewed, HBO are confident that it’ll happen – and HBO’s President of Programming, Casey Bloys, confirmed that a deal was in place with Ali for a third season.
Seems like the only thing separating everyone’s Man Crush Everyday from the small screen is signing on the dotted line at this point – and we cannot WAIT!
As of yet, no co-stars have been announced – but we’ve come up with some suggestions for who could do a great job alongside him…
Jada Pinkett Smith
We’ve seen her kick some serious butt in her years in the business; her recurring role as gang leader Fish Mooney in Gotham is just one example that shows how the Girls Trip star can command the screen – and really show the men around her who’s boss!

Michael Ealy
Michael’s distinguished, well-known, and we know he’s a versatile actor. We’d watch him read the Terms and Conditions of a phone contract, to be honest, so might as well put him in something good…
Billy Brown
We’d hate to lose him from How To Get Away With Murder, but this way Billy Brown – who plays Nate Lahey, cop and love interest of Viola Davis‘ Annalise Keating – will get more of a chance to shine. (We also may get more of those topless shots too… ahem.)

A former lead in Hawaii Five-0, Daniel’s definitely familiar with law enforcement-based procedurals – and we think he and Mahershala would make an unstoppable team!

Again, another actor who we know does NOT mess around when it comes to giving a performance to remember – he and Mahershala could probably do an episode just speaking with their eyes, and it’d be up for an Emmy…
