Kanye West splashes $85,000 on photo of Whitney Houston’s dirty bathroom – for an album cover

With the amount of controversy he has been stirring up in just this first half of the year, we are beginning to believe that Kanye West just doesn’t care to being in our good books!

Rapper and self-professed ‘God’ Kanye prides himself on being an artist, regardless of the controversy, or offense it stirs up. But weeks after claiming that 400 years of slavery was ‘a choice’, Mr Kim Kardashian has riled people up again by buying the infamous photograph of the late Whitney Houston’s drug-littered bathroom for $85,000 (£64,000) – and then using it as the cover of an album.

Distasteful, much?

The original photo was taken back in 2006 and depicts Houston’s home in Atlanta, and was only released to the public in 2012 following her death. However, Kanye purchased the license for the photograph to be used as for album cover art for new album Daytona, by his rap protégé Pusha T. So what must an album entail that it needs a photograph showing one of music’s most-loved figures at her worst?

Pusha T, who has been quiet for a few years, says that Daytona represents “having the luxury of time” and not wasting time. The whole album is just 7 songs was produced by Kanye West. Prior to the reveal of the divisive artwork, Pusha (real name Terrence Thornton) revealed in an interview with DJ and host Angie Martinez that Kanye called him up last minute at 1am and told him: “I think we should change the art.” Though Pusha T was reluctant to pay such a huge amount for new artwork, Kanye insisted, “This is what people need to see to go with this music.”

The rapper, who is excited to be releasing his first album in three years, seems to have created a divide in opinions: while some people are focusing on the music, others are truly disappointed that Pusha T would go along with Kanye’s vision for the artwork for album.

Pusha T has been vocal about not agreeing with Kanye West’s political views saying that he disagrees with him “all the time” – so we’re not quite sure why Pusha T thought it was good to go along with Kanye’s idea this time around…

In terms of the album, however, some are describing Daytona as Pusha’s best album yet – but was it really worth the controversy and insensitivity of using such a picture?
