Five reasons you need to see Hive City Legacy this summer!

It’s the show taking down the patriarchy one twerk at a time, Hive City Legacy returns to the Roundhouse after 2018’s sell-out run which brought together nine femmes of colour aged 18-25 to tell their stories. Here are five reasons why you won’t want to miss it before it goes on tour around the UK…

It confronts the same old tired narratives with liberating live performance…

Turning those same old clichés on their head, you can expect an explosive concoction of beatboxing, aerial acrobatics, spoken word and body-popping dance. Plus it ends on a massive high, inviting audiences to partake in a feel good dance party at the end.

…And addresses some pretty important issues

With dance scenes of exaggerated twerking exploring the hyper-sexualisation of black women and the male gaze, to spoken word tackling everyday racism and prejudice against young non-white women, the cast doesn’t shy away from bringing up these challenging topics on the mainstream stage.

The cast and creative team is made up entirely of people of colour

From the directors, set and costume designers, down to the illustrator, the cast and the tech team handling lighting, music and sound – this show is taking up space in all the best ways.

The show was made in collaboration with Australian sensation Hot Brown Honey

A fierce collective of femmes of colour with global First Nations heritage, Hot Brown Honey worked with the Roundhouse in 2018 to produce the show. Currently in midst of their world pollination tour, the
company are smashing stereotypes in Canada, USA, New Zealand and at home in Australia before heading back to the UK to work with the femmes of Hive City Legacy once again.

This is ultimately women and femmes at their fiercest!

Hive City Legacy is here to uplift, boundary break and celebrate with a cast that lives their best lives on stage. After the London run, they head off to Manchester, Cardiff and Bristol and then catch a flight to Rio de Janeiro to create a new version of the show there. World decolonisation is definitely on the horizon!

Hive City Legacy opens at the Roundhouse from 15 – 30 July. For more information and tickets, visit roundhouse.org.uk
