Bobbi Brown gives us four handy tips to find the perfect foundation:

1. The right foundation not only makes your skin tone look more even, your complexion looks healthy and refreshed too.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions when you visit the make up counter. A good make up artist can help you make sense of the different formulas available. Since this is such s key item in you make up bag, don’t scrimp. The foundations sold in the higher end make up lines tend to be lighter and more natural looking. I find that foundation with a yellow tone looks better on anyone, no matter what your colouring.

2. Test several shades of foundation on the side of your face, between the nose and the side of the cheek to the jawline.

Test a shade lighter and a shade darker for comparison. The correct shade will disappear. Double check colour on your forehead and always test foundation in natural light. Never test foundation on the arm, as the face is rarely the same colour as the rest of the body.

3. I think every woman should own two foundations.

You need one for the winter months, when your skin is pale, and another for the summer when you can’t help but get slightly darker. You can mix the two foundations to create your own custom colour to fix any areas of your face that are darker and lighter.

4. Tinted moisturisers are a great option for summer.

They offer lightweight coverage that lets skin show through. Plus SPF makes them a great all-in-one product. For sheer coverage, try a make up sponge or fingertips and for full coverage, use a foundation brush.
