Alicia Keys has joined forces with Young Money’s Nicki Minaj to bring some heat to the charts with her new track “Girl on Fire”. The R&B soul sensation has been quiet for almost two years but has decided to switch things up a bit and what better artist to help her kick proceedings off with a bang than Nicki?
The track, which is released on Monday, is the title track to her forthcoming fifth studio album and will come in two parts: “Girl on Fire (Blue Light)” and the “Girl on Fire (Inferno)” version, which she released yesterday.
Ms Keys’ has reminded us with this powerful track that her vocals are still some of the best aroundd and we’re sure this empowering female anthem will be a hit. The message of the song is about a girl who strives for the best but remains humble “with her feet on the ground”. The track which samples rock star Billy Squire’s 1980s breakbeat classic “The Big Beat” opens with some spooky bars from an on-form Ms Minaj who namechecks Marilyn Monroe as well as US Olympic Gold gymnast Gabby Douglas. Fans of Alicia will be delighted to hear the singer is scheduled to perform the track live at the 2012 MTV VMA awards this month.
