Action Aid marks International Women’s Day

ACTIONAID knows that women can and do transform the lives of their families and communities day in, day out.  For millions, on March 8th, this is a time to celebrate the outstanding progress and economic, political and social achievements women have made since the first International Women’s Day – 100 years ago – when people marched across Europe for women’s right to vote, work and hold public office.

For ACTIONAID, it’s also time to shine a spotlight on the struggles women are facing today in the developing world and to build solidarity to tackle the urgent challenges ahead. We campaign for a world where women and men, girls and boys, have equally good chances in life, free from want and free from fear. Despite these injustices, women everywhere are standing up to claim their rights and to fight poverty. ACTIONAID sets high priority on women’s rights because we believe that gender inequality, in and of itself, is an injustice we must fight.

Get Lippy: speak out for women living in poverty. If we aren’t equal everywhere, we aren’t equal anywhere. The wonderful Rankin shot a whole host of amazing women to mark International Women’s Day including the fabulous Beverley Knight. She said: “The sisterhood is what’s best about being a woman. Women are always there for you, always ready to fight your corner. Let’s also not forget hair, make-up, clothes, long, short, tall, blonde, bald, brunette, whatever – beautiful. The strength of a woman, that is incredible. I love how women are strong yet beautiful. What’s bad? Every month going through ‘the pain’ and knowing you’ve got to go through it again and again, and the mood swings aren’t fun either! I’d say that we, the army of women, are standing in your corner. Where you have no voice we are prepared to be your voice, we are prepared to fight your fight and remember we are an army and we do not stop marching.”
