How to Dress Up for Summer in the City

Summer is the perfect excuse to get out of the house and bask in the warm outdoors. Ezie Designs founder Esther Ihezie was inspired by her Nigerian heritage to come up with three basic clothing principles: quality, practicality, and versatility. It’s important to ask questions like: “Is it quality fabric?”, “Can I wear this on any occasion?” or “Does it match with what I already have?” And while these three concepts have influenced most of her designs, it has also become the guiding principle for most of us when we decide to go shopping.

Dressing up for the summer is no different, there’s just the extra factor of warm weather to consider. So with that in mind, here are some tips to help you get started.

Sundresses

Whether you’re looking for cool summer officewear or casual outfits for the weekend, sundresses will never let you down. They are usually made from light fabrics like cotton and linen, and can come in plain colours, various patterns, or complex prints. Sundresses are usually sold in three lengths – mini, midi and maxi – so pick the one you’re most comfortable with wearing.

Button-down Shirts

Nothing says summer like a button-down shirt that’s tossed over a bright coloured bikini, or styled alongside distressed cutoffs for a casual, cool aesthetic. The selection of button-down shirts on Woman Within come in various designs and colours for you to mix and match. Button-downs, in general, can be used in a lot of ways, like for cover-ups for swimsuits, a crop top with a pair of denim jeans, or an extra layer over a sassy dress.

Midi skirt

Not too short, and not too long – the midi skirt shows off the right amount of leg in the most flattering way possible. Lately we’ve seen trendy leopard printed midi skirts like the ones from Zalando, but they can also come in various other prints like floral and tie-dye, fabrics like satin or velvet, and also a variety of cuts (asymmetric ones are popular these days). Pair your midi skirt with the cutest jacket you own, or a short, fitted shirt you can stylishly tuck in – it’s totally up to you.

Denim shorts

With the weather getting hotter by the day, denim might be the last thing you want to wear. However, denim shorts are ideal to wear as a bikini cover-up during the summer. They can also be worn with over-sized shirts for a casual vibe, or crop tops if you feel like showing off some skin.

T-shirt and jeans

We’re all about easy outfit ideas and this style is one of the best, most effortless combos you can pull off, especially during the summer. The collection of t-shirts on Pretty Little Thing’s #everyBODYinPLT campaign contains pieces designed to make you feel good as well as look great. Pair them up with a set of printed boots or bright trainers for a nice finish.

Wedge heel

The wedge heel is a summer staple, one that you can wear to both the beach, and to the surrounding bars. Being practical, comfortable, and stylish, wedge heels are perfect for most of your summer getaways and best worn with jeans. They will also make you look that little bit taller.
