Idris Elba’s Luther makes it to the big screen, but will he have any black friends this time?

The two hour adventure featuring the ruthless crime fighting cop will start shooting in September.

Elba who is also executive producer announced, ‘ I’m so excited about this, it’s been a long time coming’. The fifth and last serious of the TV show aired in 2019. But last month BBC diversity manager Miranda Wayland said that the black character Luther  did not really feel authentic. She commented ‘ he does not have any black friends, he doesn’t eat any Caribbean food, this does not not feel real’. And Pride agrees, while the character is complex and engaging, one can feel the only thing black about him is his skin colour. We will have to wait to see if the movie presents a Luther who is not only physically black but also culturally ethnic.

Elba who has won 2 Golden Globes for the role has said that he needed ‘therapy both before and after I play him’.
