Food review: Monsieur Le Duck – London’s one-stop pop-up for all things duck

When thinking of a meal involving duck, your mind might automatically add pancakes and spring onions, and file it away as a satisfying starter.

Often, duck is classified as an optional add-on food, or as a seasonal special you might occasionally venture to when chicken just won’t do the trick. Pop-up restaurant Monsieur Le Duck brings the under-appreciated bird front and centre, with the menu featuring solely duck meat.

This is duck served differently, with aims to bring the South West of France to the City of London – and it does exactly that, with the buzzing atmosphere feeling straight out of a bustling food market. Cooked three ways, you can choose to have your duck as a burger, tender magret de canard (duck breast) or confit de canard (duck leg) – however you decide to have it, the meat is flavoursome and pleasingly juicy, and is best complemented by a generous serving of frites on the side.

Just a short walk from Liverpool Street Station, the restaurant keeps its French theme consistent with the range of wines, beers and aperitifs available. There’s a real sense of pride and passion in the restaurant, from all who work there; the enthusiasm of Monsieur Le Duck’s founder, Londoner Richard Humphreys, is clear and present in every part of the experience.

As an extra word to readers thinking of popping down to Monsieur Le Duck – don’t leave without trying the creme brûlée; sweet and creamy, it rivals the duck mains themselves as the most enjoyable part of the meal.

The experience feels like a real treat – warm, welcoming, and easy dining. Whether or not you’re on a New Year’s health kick, it’s well worth a visit to add a sprinkle of French charm to your London routine.

Monsieur Le Duck, open 7 days a week, 12pm-11pm. 4 Brushfield Street, London, E1 6AN. @monsieurleduck / leduck.co.uk
