DU-CHESS OF TENKROID

Pride speaks to founder Dot Tenkorang

Tell me about Du-chess of Tenkroid

It’s the one stop fashion destination, divided in to three easy to navigate collections. Carefully selected vintage pieces, statement jewellery teamed with individual custom West African prints. Our moto says it all – make your statement. stand bold & reign on.

Why did you decide to start the brand?

To say necessity is the mother of all inventions would be an understatement. I felt that there was a huge gap in the market for someone who wanted the option of fusing West African fabric with the influence of the western world. I wanted to create a relaxed space for people that love a dose of vintage mixed with jewellery and West African prints. Fashion is all about options and creating your style and that is what this brand is about. Not only do I want to create a brand known for beautiful quality pieces but I want to create a space where individuality is encouraged. Each piece from the Du-chess of Tenkroid collection is as a custom piece – perfect for those of us that want to avoid the ‘Who Wore It Best’ polls!

How important is women to your brand?

Girl power and female empowerment runs through the core of what we do. If you see the mood boards, social media and blog you’ll see that the brand is influenced and inspired by iconic women who have paved the way for us.

We live in a world where we are sometimes taught as women not to be so bold, not to be so confident or not to be too ambitious. Your clothing and style is a form of expression, so I have no issue with people that want to kick ass and look glam while doing it.

What do you think your offering your customer that’s fresh and new?

I believe the whole concept of Du-chess is something that is original. We cater to a wide range of people. If you love over the top 70’s glamour, we’ve got something for you. If you love west African prints, you’ll find something. I’ve sourced items such as vintage bridal wear for brides to fabulous shimmering sequin pieces for drag queens. It’s a fashion world with an array of items for everyone to get lost in. I want to create a valuable experience for the shopper. With inspiration taken from fashion icons, both past and present, I am continuously ensuring that my customers are finding pieces that work with their current fashion demands.

How has your heritage influenced your brand?

My Ghanaian heritage is clearly evident in the custom pieces I design. The Du-chess of Tenkroid Collection is an eclectic mix of the vibrant colours and patterns bringing the clothes alive. All the colours and patterns often embroided with attention to detail comes alive especially when the fabric has been cut to shape perfectly. The collection is bright, bold and certified badass, the collection includes upbeat West African prints teamed with leather styles.

What are your plans for the future?

To be bigger and better! I would love for the world of Du-chess to spread or see one of my designs on one of my favourite style icons. I look forward to the day that I see everyday people walking around in pieces I created. Imagine, getting on the tube and bumping into people wearing a pieces or even overhearing strangers recommend the brand. I want to continue to love what I do and still have the same fire in my belly as I currently do. I would love to create a charity in the near future, which will focus on educating girls and empower women. With knowledge, there is power and I would love to be in the position to have a positive influence on someone. Girl power all day every day!
