Breakin’ Convention – Social DisDancing this December, back onstage in London

The influential hip hop dance festival Breakin’ Convention returns to the London stage this December, live and direct from Sadler’s Wells. In its 17thyear and taking place just when we need it most, Breakin’ Conventionpresents Social DisDancing: Three shows featuring three of the UK’s most creative and dynamic hip hop dance crews. As always, Breakin’ Convention is hosted by festival founder and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jonzi D. Jonzi says: “After this enforced sabbatical, it’s actually a surprise to be back home on the Sadler’s Wells stage in 2020. We need to experience and participate in live dance. It’s healing.”

The line-up features the explosive all-female crew AIM Collective, with a work titled Suspended, exploring the experience of losing the ground beneath your feet, then finding resilience. The Birmingham-based O’Driscoll Collective premiere a powerful duet titled One%, looking at the importance of mental health awareness. Perennial Breakin’ Convention stalwarts, East London’s mighty Boy Blue, a multi award-winning crew founded by Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy MBE and Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante, complete the bill debuting a brand-new piece. Breakin’ Convention Social DisDancing runs nightly on Friday December 11 and Saturday December 12 with an additional Saturday afternoon show.

A welcome contrast from months of zoom meetings, webinars, too much TV and virtual entertainment, Breakin’ Convention continue their internationally renowned momentum with real live dancers and real live bodies, back onstage with socially distanced measures firmly in place. Join Jonzi D, Boy Blue, AIM and the O’Driscoll Collective for some euphoric hip hop dance theatre this December.
