Name: Stella Nwobi Stephens Age: 44
Occupation: Co-founder of Cucumba
Stella Nwobi Stephens and Vivienne Nweke quit their jobs in law and finance to launch Cucumba – The Urban Pit Stop in central London, specializing in drop-in beauty and massage therapies. Their mission was to transform a nation of stressed-out, overworked souls!
Vision: “After ten years of working as head of legal for a brand agency, I was completely burnt out. So I walked away from my job and took a sabbatical to look at things to do. Vivienne had also left her job as a financial analyst for Lloyds. We felt that there really wasn’t anything for the young, urban professionals who led stressful lives. We wanted to create a place for everyday people to pop in and get good-quality pampering services in a lovely, friendly environment.”
Funding: “Initially, we relied on friends and family for funding. We were clear that we were not just going to be selling manicures and pedicures, but a whole lifestyle. We got a small DTI loan, a small-funds loan guarantee scheme where candidates are minority ethnic groups and women.”
Challenges: “Access to finances was a problem. In the first six months, we almost went under but then, most amazingly, we turned it into a marketing opportunity. When we told our customers what was happening, they rallied around to help save us. Everyone spread the word and extended their mailing list to their friends. At the moment, we have customers from all over the world as a result of this!”
Words of wisdom: “Never underestimate the power of dreams. You have to keep believing in your dream whatever happens. Vivienne and I got to the stage where we couldn’t afford to eat! Looking back, I don’t know how we kept going, but we were so passionate.”
