Disney’s first black princess
It’s no secret that Disney has experienced quite a rocky road with regards to race relations. The organisation has fended off allegations of racism since the 1940’s, and recently had to re-write the script for their first African American feature due to accusations of racial stereotypes. Well now it appears as if they have finally come up with the magic formula, and we’ll soon be able to see their first black princess on screen. Enter Princess Tiana – a 19 year old, African American who lives in a country without a monarchy, and ultimately lives happily ever after with a handsome young man. Sounds very delightful, very Disney.
Lack of funding may cause school to close down
The Boyhood to Manhood Foundation in Camberwell Green, London may be forced to close down due to lack of funding. The organisation was established in 1996 and in a short space of time managed to turn the lives around of over 11,000 black men. Co-founder, Uanu Seshmi, claims that requests for government funding has been ignored. “We need to bring in some professional staff, as the need to take on more boys has never been greater”, he explained. At a time when gang crime is at its height, the Government’s decision not to fund this successful project is almost in itself criminal.
